11/26/24-I don’t know if it’s the drugs they have her on post spay but Carlee is a totally different dog today. LOL She’s walking around the house, eating from the dogs dishes, letting me pet her, took a treat from me, laying down next to me by the couch, following me around. She and shadow are snuggled up next to each other on the rug too!
11/22/24-Carlee is having a great day today. Has only peed outdoors. Is socializing more. Letting us pet her without running to a corner. She loves the outdoors but makes me super nervous when she first gets out there because she wants to dart. Once she’s out there a little bit she settles down and she loves to sniff everything. Baby steps!11/25/24-Carlee did great with her spay appointment today. At her initial vet check the day she came into rescue the vet heard a possible low grade heart murmur. Most often we find there is no murmur & was just high stress & noisy environment at the vet doing 30 dogs at once in a very short time span. Our vet who did her spay & more detailed check up & heart monitor at spay did not find any murmur. Since she got home she’s eaten, had water and gone potty outside.
Here’s my Carlee 101:
- She’s fine with cats
- Spayed now
- Great with my 2 dogs. In fact seems to be gaining in confidence from them.
- Crate trained
- Excelling at potty training. No accidents in the house for the last 3 days and will whine letting me know she has to go out.
- She is not treat driven. She would rather be praised and pet. I kissed her head today and she looked at me like what was that and also like she liked it. lol
- We are working on the following:
- Stairs
- Leash walking
- Gaining confidence with people
Otherwise she is sweet as can be. You can tell she really wants to trust you and I see strides in that every day. Today in the waiting room at the vet she was sitting by the Christmas trees and looking out the window and sitting next to me. All things that make me super proud of her. She is now ready to go home & is going to fill someone’s heart for sure!!
11/23/24-Carlee really had a stellar day yesterday. Socializing with not just the dogs but with us. Continues to sleep through the night. Dry crate in the morning. Doesn’t chase the cats. Loves to be with the dogs. Displays zero food aggression or any other aggressive behavior towards people. Upon slow approach she is accepting being pet and seems to be processing that she’s enjoying it. Strange to her but nice. You can see in her eyes how smart she is and she is so sweet. She will use the bathroom outside and loves to sniff the grass. Getting her out there is still a work in progress but am confident in no time she will figure it out.
11/21/24-Carlee has been with us almost a week. While she is still timid, she continues to show us how brave she is. She has gone from not wanting to leave her crate to now coming out when I open it in the morning, although I still need to leave the room for her to do so. She has discovered she can go behind the couch but still peek out to see what’s going on. Here she tests the waters and will come partially out and even right out to the middle of the room. Today she even stayed out when my daughter came down the stairs. Typically an event that would cause her to go back and hide. She also really seems to find comfort in being around the dogs and I truly believe she would be best placed with a home that has dogs. It is with them that I feel she finds courage and is learning to be a dog again. When I call the dogs to go out I can hear her trailing behind them but will turn around when she sees us. We have 2 cats and I’m not sure they even notice one another. Even in her timid state she will let us pet her. There has been zero aggression. She’s skeptical but really very sweet and that face melts my heart. Each day we see progress. She sleeps in her crate overnight and we wake up to a dry crate each morning. She has to be carried outside where we put her on a long leash and she does use the bathroom. She’ll even sniff around and check things out. I look forward to the progress she continues to make each day!
11/20/24-It was a big day for Carlee yesterday! She went outside and seemed to enjoy sniffing everything. She walked in the grass, went potty and then came inside and later laid down next to where I was working. I suspect it was only because my dog Kyle was there but I’ll take it. I did all I could to contain my excitement. LOL Carlee definitely will need to go to a home with other dogs. She loves our dogs and seems quite comfortable with them. They seem to make her brave. She is still very leery of people but getting slightly more courageous each day.
11/18/24-Carlee slept through the night again. Like Sunday morning she didn’t want to leave her crate. I went with the “give it time approach”. She did have an accident in her crate today so I cleaned around her. About an hour later she came out on her own. She had some water and a little food and is hanging out in the living room where she’s found a sunny spot. Each day seems to be just a little bit better.
11/17/24-Carlee arrived the yesterday afternoon. She made little to no eye contact with us that evening and felt safest in her crate with her back to us. She did however eat a little moist food and had a little bit of water. She was quiet all night and appeared to sleep pretty good after her travels to us. This morning after much debate on how to get her out of her crate to use the bathroom; she came out on her own when no one was looking and peed as soon as I took her out. Safe to say we were all relieved. I closed the gate door in an effort for her to spend a little time out with us. She didn’t need to interact but I was hopeful she would get the sense that no one was going to harm her here. My dogs have been great foster brothers and have given her quiet space. She and Shadow did sniff one another and were perfectly fine. The 2 cats did venture past her and she just watched them. I know there’s still a great deal of decompressing to be done but it’s nice to see her out in general pop. My daughter and her husband came over last night. We sat on the floor next to her crate quietly talking and Carlee seemed to be taking it all in.. or quietly judging us. LOL Either way you can tell she’s really studying everyone and thing. I feel like there were many wins this morning. I anticipate each day to be different as she begins to decompress and trust us all a little more. Looking forward to watching her shine.
11/15/24-Carlee is a beautiful 2 year old female black tri-color standard size Australian Shepherd. She came in from a commercial breeder that no longer needed her. She arrived into rescue today thanks to her transport & temporary foster home volunteers. She will be spayed on Monday 11/25 & will be ready to go home soon after that.
