11/17/23-Stewart’s littermate was adopted yesterday, and as Dickens and his new furever parents drove away, Stewart did not skip a beat or bat an eyelash. Without the frenetic puppy energy the two were emitting and reacting to, it is easy to see Stewart’s personality. He is playful, inquisitive, and intelligent. He enjoys romping around the yard with or without my dog. He always comes back to me to see what I am going to do next. He is treat-motivated. When he goes potty outside, I am able to reward him with a treat, which makes training much easier. (Mill dogs are rarely treat-motivated, but since he is a puppy, he thankfully did not experience too much time on the farm living without positive and loving human interactions.) Stewart loves investigating the fenced in yard. He will grab a leaf or a toy and run around with it in his mouth. Inside, he is always nose to the ground looking for where my dog has dropped her kibble, and he always sniffs it out. He has figured out it is usually near her bowl or just under the dining room table. He is learning his name and coming to me when I call him over. I called his name on our walk this morning and he looked at me. When I called my own dog’s name, he did not look. I called his name and he again looked at me. He’s getting there! He did really well in the crate last night. I was worried because it was his first night alone in it, and it was same as usual. I couple whines and cries, which were silenced by a firm “no” and he slept through the night. He is not a fan of the crate during the day while I am at work. He barks and whines throughout the day. I am hoping this will get better over time (it’s only been a week!) Stewart has been getting better with the cats. My cats are getting used to him, but since they are geriatric and have some health issues, his energy is a bit overwhelming at times. They are coming out more and do not run away from him when he runs up to them.  If it is a home with dog-savvy cats who can deal with puppy energy and curiosity, I think it would be okay. He is not aggressive; he is just all up in their space. LOL  Overall, I am pleased with his progress and happy to report there are no issues with him being separated from his littermate. More updates to follow as I get to know this little gentleman.

11/12/23-Stewart is a mini aussiedoodle who came into rescue because he was too old to sell. Thank you to his wonderful temporary foster mom, Mary, who picked him up from transport and had him groomed. He was filthy dirty, stinky, and flea infested. She was able to get him cleaned up and oh, what a difference.

Stewart is your typical puppy – playful, energetic, and in constant need of attention. He does well using the pee pads in the house and he hasn’t had any accidents in his crate. He went the entire night without incident. He has a good appetite. He is not fussy about food and will eagerly eat his meals. We (3 dogs) attempted a walk this morning. It was a challenge with Stewart and his littermate Dickens as they have never been leash walked before. They did finally settle into a good walking rhythm by the time we finished. I will keep working on this. He did great though, walking a little over a mile. He could’ve gone longer, too.

Stewart is playful with his littermate and my own dog. My dog is older so she can only tolerate so much puppy playfulness. I would not suggest a home with cats. He is too interested in my cats and is wanting to chase them. I don’t know if it is playfulness or aggressiveness, but it is stressing my cats out and they want nothing to do with him. (My cats are very dog savvy, as they have always lived with dogs.)

At this age Stewart needs to be with his human even though he is being fostered with his littermate. If I leave the room he will bark and whine until I come back. He enjoys snuggling on the couch.

Stewart does bark and whine in his crate when I am leaving. I do believe he settles down eventually. He is a vocal dog, though, so he would not do well in an apartment/condo situation. More updates to follow as I get to know him better.

11/09/23-Stewart is an adorable 17 week old Mini aussiedoodle (miniature poodle/miniature Australian shepherd). He is a F1B generational doodle, meaning he is 3/4 mini poodle, which gives him more of poodle coat.  He was saved from being killed by a puppy mill along with his brother Dickens as they just got too old for them to sell. They arrived safely into rescue tonight thanks to their transport & overnight volunteers. We estimate they both will be about 25 lbs full grown. More updates soon from their foster home!
