12/11/23-Tiberius has been with us since 11/17. He spent the first 3 years of his life in a cage as a breeder dog. Tiberius has come along by leaps and bounds in the 3 weeks he’s lived here, but he will need a family with the patience to continue to help him figure out how to be a dog. He spends more and more time out of his crate socializing with people and yesterday even played with my boxer Macha for a bit! He has had only three accidents, he is brought outside first thing in the morning and will pee and poop, then he is typically good until bed time. He doesn’t let us know he has to go out yet though, just keep him on a schedule. Tiberius loves LOVES to hang out on the couch with you! He will lay right next to me, content for a long time. His ideal home would be either as an only dog or with medium activity dogs that won’t overwhelm him. He does fine outside with you on a leash. He really is a gentle and loving dog but will need the right home to bring him to his full potential.

12/6/23-Tiberius is doing very well & now ready to go home!  He still can’t get himself on the couch under his own power but he’s closer! He tries to jump but he’d rather be lifted up! Lol It is grear to see him getting comfortable on the couch with me. I got up from the couch last night and he STAYED THERE by himself. He used to hop down and hide in his hidey spot. He let me kinda pet his belly last night too.  He’s definitely starting to relax more. He is ok with the kids but when they get hyper/running it is too much for him.  I think Tiberius would be fine with kids 8+ that are calmer. Younger kids will be too much energy and excitement for him. He is not aggressive, he just gets overwhelmed & hides.
I take him outside on a slip lead as soon as he gets out of his crate, so his accidents in the house have been very few. He will walk on a leash and not stop/pull back to escape, but he does pull so some more leash training will be needed. Right now he hasn’t figured out to eat treats but two things he does love: peanut butter and yogurt!  He still won’t play with toys or chase anything we throw, even with Macha showing him how, but he has occasionally chewed a nylabone. We don’t have a way to cat test him but he will probably be fine as he doesn’t show any prey drive. We have found most puppymill dogs are good with cats (they have lots of barn cats). I also think a cat would smack Tiberius once & he would hide, if he was even brave enough to get near a cat! LOL
I think he does like going in cars as he hopped right in a stranger’s car that time he went for an unexpected run without us.
This calm, gentle, sweet boy has lots of potential & will make a great best friend & family member. Tiberius is sleeping next to me on the couch, dreaming of his perfect forever family & hoping to be home for the holidays!

12/2/23-Tiberius thinks hanging out on the couch with me at night after the kids are in bed, watching vet shows, is now acceptable. He even fell asleep on my arm for a few minutes! He would still rather hide most of the day, but when he is out he is really improving! He even barked last night for the first time (at his own reflection! Lol).

11/28/23-Tiberius has been making some progress in his comfort and confidence being in a home. He seeks us out when it’s quiet in the later afternoon and evening times, and wants attention and pets. He was brave enough to snag a nylabone to chew on! Tiberius has occasionally been eating during the day instead of waiting till everyone is asleep. He has only had two accidents inside, I don’t know if I’d consider him house trained though since he still spends about 70% of his awake time hiding right now. Poor boy! We had the first bit of snow & he doesn’t seem to be a fan of the snow. He did the fastest potty break ever. LOL He may have lived in barn/kennel completely inside & never had exposure to snow.  Tiberius had a big breakthrough & sat on my lap. It only lasted about three minutes before he climbed down though, but baby steps! He’s also shedding a LOT less since he’s been on good food & out of the stress of the mill. He likes his food mixed with a little bit of wet food.
I do want to mention that whoever is interested in adopting him should be vigilant with not leaving doors to outside open.  He took an unexpected tour of our little village on Thanksgiving after slipping out a door that was left ajar.  He did jump in a car shortly after though so made his way home for snacks. A house with a lot of kids constantly going in and out without the doors opening into a fenced yard may not be good for Tiberius.  Adults or older kids that understand his flight risk & take the proper precautions to thwart his traveling desires would be better.  More updates soon as Tiberius continues to learn about life outside a cage in the puppymill.

11/21/23-After shutting down the day after he arrived, Tiberius’s confidence is finally coming back! He has been out of his crate exploring most of the day today, and even got himself into some shenanigans!
He doesn’t like it when the house is really active, I think it still makes him a little nervous, but I feel like he will get better about it. He does NOT potty in his crate, and sleeps perfectly the entire night. Tiberius is still doing well taking his meds and ear drops.
He hasn’t shown much interest in toys yet, but he did go investigate one that was thrown this morning for our other dog.

11/20/23-Some confidence is happening here! Tiberius was standing in his cage with the door open, whining and whining, then ventured all the way into the kitchen! Good boy!

11/19/23-Right now Tiberius has been panting any time he’s out of his crate due to the anxiety of all the changes from mill life.  I’ve been giving him breaks to go back in his crate every so often. If I just leave him to it with the door open he won’t come out on his own. He also only wants to eat in the middle of the night. I’ve been sleeping on the couch near his crate and I’ve heard him finally eating during the night. We never force eating outside the crate since our Boxer will eat anyone’s food she can get to. Tiberius is struggling with being out of his crate, or outside where he can hear other dogs barking. We are working on some forced people time today. He just wants to go hide in the smallest spot if I close him out of his crate, so we are leashed together. He did take a trip around Petsmart yesterday in a cart to try to expose him to new people & things.  He is going to need a couple of weeks to decompress & adjust to life outside the mill before we will be able to look for his new home.

11/18/23-Tiberius arrived yesterday afternoon. So far he is getting along great with our two dogs. Tiberius is a very HAPPY boy and loves to give kisses and get attention. His first night here he slept quite well in a crate with no crying or accidents all night. He does a delightful four way sploot with his legs when he is tired.  Right now Tiberius is marking in the house, but as an ex-mill dad that’s pretty expected. He hasn’t discovered the joys of toys or treats yet, but has shown interest in peanut butter! He doesn’t mind getting his ear drops done, or taking his antibiotics. He was great for getting brushed and let me trim his paw pads. We are excited to get to know him better in the coming days.

11/17/23-Tiberius is a handsome 3 year old male old mini aussie (miniature Australian Shepherd) rescued from a puppy mill as they were just done breeding him. He arrived safely into our rescue tonight thanks to his transport volunteers. He is a little overweight so with a little exercise he will closer to only 30 lbs. He does have some yeast & bacteria infections in his ears which he is being treated for with ear drops for 7 days. Updates soon from his foster home.
