2/14/24-Birdie has progressed better than I imagined so far but she could benefit from several more days in rescue. I feel she would do best in a quiet house with someone home more (either retired or work at home owner).  I get the sense she may never be a dog that likes to walk on a leash. She will need someone with a fenced yard & that’s not super active and expecting her to go for hikes, camping, dog park, etc.  She seems to be an old soul so really a homebody would be best for her.  She is so gentle but I think the activity of kids (of any age) & lots of people coming & going a lot in the house would be too much for her.  She is one of those mill dogs that although very young needs a special type of home due to her past.

2/12/24- Birdie’s got a fresh hairdo!!  She had a cute little figure under all that hair and is feeling sooooo much better.  No more painful, stinky mats for this girl!  I think this has helped her come out of her shell more.  She’s found the toys and likes to chew them occasionally.  Still no engagement with my pack of dogs but she does like to watch them, and they are very respectful of her space.  When we go outside, she’s sniffing more and more, developing a healthy curiosity and getting mental stimulation. I put her on a harness & long lead while doing yard work over the weekend. She didn’t love the lead, but she seemed to enjoy just being outside, the sun, and taking naps behind the shrubs.  My husband boosted her onto the couch the other day and this has become her favorite place to be!  In fact, she figured out how to get around the baby gate and we now find her sitting on the couch every time we come home!  She hasn’t been destructive, but she likes to round up the slippers, and has had accidents in the house. Potty training will take some time, but she’ll get there!  Every day she’s trusting more and has great direct eye contact.  She’s learning how to relax & receive luvins too – even stretching out full length on the couch and snuggling (usually my hubby!).  Tonight was the first time she ate 100% of her dinner which made me so happy to see!  The little things sometimes make the biggest impact. I suspect she was fed and watered once/day (at night) because she doesn’t seem interested in breakfast and I rarely see her drink.  Poor girl never knew food = LOVE.  We are fixing that and more!!
Birdie is super popular but will need at least another week in rescue to see more of her personality & the needs for her new home before we start looking to pick her match. More updates as we get to know her better.

2/9/24-Birdie is doing great after her spay!  She seems comfortable and is eating & sleeping well.  Unlike any other foster we’ve had, we do not crate her.  I think she’d be fine in a crate, but my fear is the potential trauma from having to pull her out for potty & social.  So at night, we “corral” her in a corner by the bedside with a gate.  During the day, we move her bed into the bathroom and use a baby gate so she can see my pack and know she’s safe, but not alone.  She is doing really well with this set up – she’s very quiet, no destruction, and respects the gates.  She actually likes chilling out in our walk-in shower as it’s quiet, accessible, and safe.  Every day I see her make small strides in her rehab from the mill.  For instance, I was having to carry her up/down the stairs for potty time, but she is starting to navigate this on her own, with a lot of verbal coaxing.  However, once outside, she doesn’t know what she’s supposed to do and will often just lay down or go behind our evergreen tree.  I usually leash walk my fosters around the yard to explore but haven’t been able to do this with her as she immediately puts on the brakes.  Today she took a big step by following her nose along the foundation of my house (off leash) – this was so brave of her, I celebrated that with lots of verbal praise.  I do think she would benefit from a fenced yard where she would be safe yet independent.  I can’t wait to witness & share her progress as this sweet lady continues to decompress!

2/7/24-Birdie was spayed today & is starting her spay recovery. I am going to try and trim her up a little over the weekend if she’s not too scared of it. More updates as she settles in & we determine what type of home she needs for her forever family.

2/6/24-Each day we are seeing progress. We’ve nick named her “little face” as she waits until she thinks you’re not looking and you’ll see her sweet little face pop out from around the door.  She made her way into the kitchen to check things out last night.  She trotted around the island a few times and made her way to the kids slippers and my boots. Then dragged them to her bed. We’ve determined she’s a LL Bean kind of gal.  lol.  She then made her way to the living room but didn’t commit to fully coming in.  But progress.. all progress.  My husky came to visit her in her domain/area in the bathroom and she was fine with that. She continues to sleep/be content through the night.  Although I will hear her playing with her toys which is so great to hear.  Potty training is a work in progress but she definitely has a schedule/pattern we’re seeing so I suspect once she gets more used to the outdoors she should be fairly easy to predict and potty train.
She seems to really like my husband and sought him out again this morning in his office. However I’m feeling flattered right now as she’s lying about 2 feet from where I’m working.  She’s an amazing little girl and is quick to steal your heart. She is going in for her spay appointment Wednesday/tomorrow morning.  Birdie will need a little more time after her spay to see her true personality come out before she will be ready to be adopted.

2/5/24-Birdie did great again last night.  She slept (or at least was quiet) all night. While I was bringing our daughter to school mu husband told me that she ventured out of the bathroom and into the kitchen to sit with him next to the wood stove.  That was a big step for her. The cat also visited her this morning.  They both checked each other out and she didn’t seem to have any type of reaction to him. She continues to be curious about the dogs and I’ll catch her peaking around the corner.  I truly believe she will need someone who will be home on a more regular basis and able to provide her a quiet space to continue to come out of her shell. She has been fine with the older kids.  I don’t have young ones to test out.  But that face of hers.  So sweet and you can tell she wants to trust.  She will be spayed this Wednesday as her appointment was moved due to a vet being out sick.

2/4/24-Birdie day 2.  When Birdie arrived yesterday she wanted nothing to do with us or the dogs.  She found herself a safe spot in the bathroom so we  set her up with some blankets, toys, food, water and a treat.  She is eating and drinking like a champ. She had a solid night just waking up once around 3am to let me know she didn’t like her wet blanket. After a blanket change and a few pets she went back to sleep until around 8:00. She is still very apprehensive of the outdoors and drops to the ground when placed outside to use the bathroom, so potty training is a work in progress and will require patience, praise and consistency. My dogs have been very good about giving her space and she’s beginning to come out of the bathroom on her own to check them and us out.  We took a trip to Tractor Supply today for a more thorough bath. I also clipped as many mats as possible still leaving her plenty of fur but she will need a good grooming.  She seemed to enjoy riding in the shopping cart and taking in all the smells and checking out the other dogs.  She didn’t seem bothered by this field trip and activity. She actually seemed quite relaxed. She has a sweet demeanor and when she looks at you she has these soulful eyes as if she’s really studying you.
Her very actions of small attempts to come check us out makes my heart happy. Baby steps. She is now scheduled to be spayed this Wednesday 2/7 and will be available for adoption shortly thereafter once we get to know her better.

2/3/24-Birdie is here at her foster home and just got out of the tub. One of probably a few baths she’ll need to get cleaned up from the mill, Poor girl! But she’s very sweet and very patient. Birdie is settling in later in evening.  She is trembling less as the night goes on. She has had a bath, she has eaten and had a treat but wouldn’t take it from my hand. She gets brave if no one is watching her. Both my dogs have viewed her and her them from a distance as she is still very scared.  She has a soulful little face like she’s trying to figure you out. She seems pretty happy/has found her safe spot in the downstairs bathroom and I’ve made her a little bed area in there with some toys, food and water.  Her temporary foster home said Birdie was adept at escaping from her cage and tried to free foster girl Sadie as well. LOL  She also got into some paper towels and shredded them up.  I am hopeful that tomorrow as she decompresses a little more I get to experience some of that playful mischievous side.  He also said, and I experienced this as well, that when you take her out to use the bathroom she just lays down on the ground.  I have some puppy pads on the bathroom floor and we will just keep trying. Birdie will need a little decompression time from the mill.
02/01/24-Birdie is an adorable 14 month old Mini Bernedoodle (Miniature Poodle/Bernese Mountain Dog) that was saved from a puppy mill. She arrived safely into rescue tonight thanks her transport & temporary foster volunteers. She has her spay on Monday 2/5 & to get her ears looked at too as they are dirty (unsure if may have infection). Once she is spayed & we get to know her a little bit more she will be ready to go home. More updates soon from her foster home.
