2/23/24-What a week it’s been for Emmy! She is really coming around and getting used to life outside the cage. It has taken some time but the changes in the last few days have been amazing. Wednesday morning was tough, she was still so shut down. I left for work feeling defeated, it’s disheartening to see any dog much less such a young one so unsure of their great new life. Wednesday afternoon the weather was sunny and warm so when I came home I helped Emmy out of her crate and we went outside. It was like someone flipped a switch and Emmy suddenly decided to trust me. She had a great 1 1/2 hours outside with me and her dog friends. Once in the house she didn’t immediately run to her crate either. She even participated in “cookie time” with her dog friends. In typical Bulldog fashion she can be won over with some tasty treats.
Everything has been on the up and up since Wednesday. Yes, she still gets a bit overwhelmed and nervous but she now seems to have the skills needed to work through it instead of hiding on her crate. Now that Emmy feels safe in the yard she is quickly becoming housebroken. After she potties in the yard she runs over to me hoping for a treat but sometimes simply getting a “Good girl Emmy!” To which she wiggles her little nub. This girl is treat motivated which is fabulous (most mill dogs are not). Training should be pretty easy.
This morning Emmy came up to me and wanted attention and pets. She’s done it before but she was tentative and nervous but today was the REAL deal! She was confident and thoroughly enjoying the attention. She also figured out if she goes to the back door we will gladly let her out for some play time.
Emerson is definitely going to need a patient family to get her through the initial settling in but she is a great dog. Her perfect home will have a fenced yard (due to how shut down she is we have not worked on leash walking yet) and another dog. She definitely is much more confident following her canine friends leads. She is very easy going with the 3 other dogs in her foster home. More updates and pictures coming soon.

2/19/24-Cool thing…Emmy’s eyes when it’s bright outside look blue (see close up). If it’s gloomy her blue goes away!

2/17/24-Emerson has arrived into rescue! She is an absolutely gorgeous tri-color Merle English Bulldog with blue eyes!!! One glimpse of this pup and you will see exactly why they wanted her to make lots of puppies. They would have been gorgeous!  In a stroke of strange luck she wasn’t producing pups so was surrendered to rescue. It was only during her spay that the reason behind not having puppies was found. Emerson was found to have both male and female “parts”. Her uterus was attached to testicles where her ovaries should have been. That was a surprise to all of us especially because on the outside she’s very much a female dog. Since she is now altered there are no worries about this condition, and she will live a happy, healthy life. If this is what it took to get her out of a mill at only 2 years old I’m looking at it as a positive.
Emerson is very scared of life outside of the cage but is very sweet and docile. She has made so many positive changes already that in a few more days I expect she will turn into a much more confident bulldog. She had cherry eye surgery in her right eye when she was spay and is so good about letting me put the antibiotic ointment in it. She’s just a little bulldog at about 40 pounds, she could stand to gain just a few pounds but she is the perfect size!  More updates and pictures coming as we get to know Emmy better.

2/16/24-Emerson (AKA: Emmy) is a 2 yr old female gorgeous unique colored blue merle English Bulldog. She arrived safely into rescue tonight thanks to her transport volunteers.  She was saved from a puppy mill as we now realize they could not get her to become pregnant (& for good reason)…turns out she is a hermaphrodite! When our vet opened her up to spay her they found Emmy’s uterus was attached to testicles where her ovaries should have been. She looks female on the outside though. We also had cherry eye fixed in her right eye & a dental cleaning (no extractions) done. She has yeast in her ears so she has medicine for that, an eye ointment antibiotic & regular oral antibiotics too. Once we get to know Emmy better she will be ready to go home! Updates soon from her foster home.
