11/14/24-Pearl is learning life is not so scary outside the mill. She now has our routine daily down. Pearl happily greets me at the door with the other dogs. She loves to hang out on the couch and now sleeps in bed with the rest of the crew. She does come up to me now to be picked up. She will still get scared if you pick her up too fast but once you pick her up she will stay for hours. Pearl would do best in a more quiet home. Where are all the precious gem lovers at?! Pearl is ready & waiting!
10/30/24-Pearl loves to be “in the know” but not really participate yet. This girl will need a home that allows her the time to discover life outside a mill is good. She is ok to come up to you for a scratch under the chin but is still scared when you pick her up. I do “forced family fun” I brought her up on the bed with the rest of the dogs to be petted and hang out with the girls so she can realize I won’t hurt her. Pearl loves her crate and is doing well on potty training.
10/29/24-Pearl is a little unsure about us still. I think I tried to push her out of her comfort zone too soon so I’m giving her a bit more quiet time. She chose to stay in the kitchen while her sister slept in bed with us.
10/27/24-Opal & Pearl arrived at our foster home today because their foster mom was going away. Let me tell if you are a little dog or Yorkie people, these girls are a delight. Super cute, their picture’s don’t do them justice. They had a meet and greet with my two yorkie girls in the back yard . They have been following my girls in and out ever since. Opal seems to be the most outgoing and wants to be with my dogs . Pearl is content to lay in the crate and observe. More as I get to know them. I’m expecting by the end of the week to have my own girl gang!
10/26/24-Opal and Pearl had a spa day today! The groomer remembered them from when I first brought them in back in August and remarked how much better they look now. Both girls were good. Pearl was squirmier. These girls are ready for transport tomorrow and the next leg of their journey to finding their furever home. I am heartbroken I will not be able to see their fostering through, but I do have a good feeling they will soon find their perfect home soon.

9/19/24-Pearl is home from her spay & dental. She had 15 teeth removed, poor little thing! We doubt if she has many if any teeth left. She is still groggy and resting now. Nothing else noted during her procedures so I’m relieved about that. Pearl will be ready to go home in a couple of days once she heals a bit.
9/15/24-New picture of Opal and Pearl waiting patiently for me to finish making their favorite peanut butter dog treats. Lol
9/14/24-Pearl is continuing to make progress since coming into rescue. She enjoys exploring the backyard. When she is finished investigating, she will plop down in the grass and sleep. She is still hesitant to come back into the house so I have to guide her in with her leash. Pearl is a quiet dog. The only time I hear her bark is when her foster sister is barking at something. Pearl enjoys sleeping in her crate or on the sofa. She sleeps through the night without issue, too.
Pearl is still jumpy and reactive to quick, sudden movements. She will cower away or run and then eventually roll over on her back when I am trying to put her leash on or if I want to pick her up. She will come to me from across the yard, stop about an arm’s length away, lean in and sniff and lick my fingers, but as soon as I reach for her or she has had enough, she backs away. She wants the affection, but she is still learning to trust. She is a squirmy dog. She is not completely comfortable with being fussed over and examined yet. She was squirmy at the vet, but tolerated the exam.
Pearl had her pre-spay appointment and is in generally good health except for her teeth. The vet said the teeth she has will need to be extracted due to years of neglect. She is currently eating a wet food diet with some water-soaked kibble mixed in which she seems to enjoy. She also likes the homemade peanut butter dog cookies I make for her. She will need to continue with a soft food diet.
Pearl does okay on leash. We are able to go for short walks and she seems to enjoy that. Right now, I am using a harness in addition to a slip leash just to be on the safe side since she does startle easily.
We are still working on potty training. Accidents have been minimal and happen when I am out of sight. I have left her out of her crate while running errands and she did well.
Pearl’s spay and dental will be on Thursday 9/19 and then she will be ready for her new family. She will need a family that is patient and willing to allow her to continue to come out of her shell at her own pace.
9/3/24-Pearl is single and ready to mingle. She is becoming more accepting of me touching her as long as I don’t go too quickly. Leash walking is not her favorite activity just yet. With more practice we’ll get there. She will do her business on a short walk. She seems pretty playful in the yard, but foster sister, Opal, is more of an introvert. Pearl enjoys cuddling- as long as you have four legs.
8/27/24-Little Miss Pearl is making small gains. She is still nervous and tentative when approached or coming out of her crate, but once she is outside, she loves to run around the yard and explore. I do keep a leash on her to drag around so that I can easily grab her when it is time to come in the house. I have been working on her coming in on her own, but she is still too nervous to take those actual steps. She is slowly learning the routine of going outside to potty when she does come out of the crate. She is using the pee pads pretty consistently when left unattended in the kitchen area. Pearl remains pretty quiet in her crate and will only bark if her foster sister barks at something. Pearl feels very safe and secure in her crate. I am working on her sitting outside the crate, but again, she is super nervous when I approach. As nervous as she is, she does roll over for me to pet her tummy. When I leave the kitchen, I do find her outside of her crate and when I come back, she runs back into her crate. At night while watching tv, she lounges on the sofa and is pretty at ease. I take this opportunity to pet her and get close to her and to let her know she will never have to fear human beings again. She loves to snuggle with her foster sister, too. She is such a cute and inquisitive little girl. She just needs to get used to humans and the world around her. Pearl will need a home that is on the quiet side, patient, understanding, and where she will be given the time she needs to adjust to her new life outside of the commercial breeding industry.
8/21/24-Pearl made it safely to her foster home on Saturday. She was extremely nervous, and after 3 days she is finally beginning to show signs of becoming more at ease with her new living situation. She still cowers as far back in her crate as possible to avoid me putting a leash on her to go outside, but once it is on her she is doing so much better at going outside and walking on the leash in the yard. I am now able to drop the leash and let her wander around the yard to do her business. I keep the leash on as a safety measure because she is still learning her name and does not eagerly run up to me when called just yet. Pearl has also just started running around the yard and even tries to get her foster sister to join in with her!! This is HUGE!! She is slowly coming out of her shell and showing her true personality and spirit which has been nearly broken after years of commercial breeding. It has been quite rainy here the last 4 days so we haven’t spent too much time outside. Now that she is more comfortable with the leash and walking, I am going to start taking her for walks. Now that she is more comfortable with the leash and she is learning that when the leash goes on, we go outside to potty, I am going to start working on potty training. Pearl is quiet in her crate. This girl is catching up on 7 years of sleep. She will hang out in her crate while I am doing things in the kitchen and will often cuddle up with her foster sister in one of their crates. She has not had any accidents in her crate. She goes through the night without issue so I anticipate her being okay in her crate for a full work day. I am still trying to figure out the food thing for Pearl. I am trying various ways of feeding her. She seems to prefer soft food over kibble. This could be due to the fact that some of her teeth may be giving her problems. Pearl’s pre-spay appointment is not until September 13th, so we have plenty of time for her to continue to decompress, learn her name, some basic vocabulary, and housetraining.
8/18/24-Precious gems, Pearl and Opal, are decompressing. Both girls are in need of some TLC. Still very nervous and timid. I am sure once they start feeling better they will come out of their shell. My cat, Gus, was either guarding them or making sure they stay put! LOL
08/16/24-Pearl is a cute 7 year old female Yorkichon(Yorkshire Terrier/bichon frise) who arrived tonight thanks to her transport & overnight volunteers. She came from a commercial breeder as they just didn’t need her anymore. Her initial vet check noted she will need some teeth extracted & has a luxating patella(like a “trick knee”) on her left leg but nothing needed to do about it. She also came with antibiotics for a runny nose. Her pre-spay appointment is on Friday 9/13 & her spay will be scheduled hopefully soon after that. Once she is spayed she will be ready to go home!
