2/28/22-Harrison has been here a little over a week and continues to be a sweet, gentle bulldog. He is learning the routine here and progressing with housebreaking. He has showed a playful side a few times, but he is still unsure of himself and it’s short lived. He did start to wiggle his little nub which is adorable! I have to admit it made my heart happy to see his nub wiggling as I was talking to him.

I also found out Harrison has a voice! He isn’t a barker by any means but once in a while he reminds us he’s here. Usually when he’s sleeping, and someone comes home he lets out a few woofs then stops when he realizes what is going on.
He is so good about letting me clean and medicate his badly infected ears. I know it is uncomfortable (especially in the beginning) but he just willingly lets me do what I need to do without any fuss. Same with his eye meds. He’s such a gentle soul.
Harrison will need someone with patience to help him transition from life in a cage to that of a loved family pet. A fenced yard would be best for him as he gets nervous and won’t walk when leashed. So, he will need some work there too. While Harrison is welcome to stay as long as he needs to what he really needs is a family to love him forever and help him become the best family dog he can be!

2/20/22-Harrison (named after the Beatles George Harrison) arrived on Friday. He was freed from a puppy mill after 6 long years of being used only for breeding and never knowing the love of being a family pet. His namesake was sometimes referred to as the quiet Beatle and that is so true with Harrison. He has yet to bark or make a peep besides the occasional snoring when he sleeps.

It seems as though male puppy mill dogs are often more neglected both medically and as far as interactions with humans. Harrison is afraid of this BIG new world but we have seen progress already in just 2 days. During his neuter he had a dental and 16 teeth extracted! I can only imagine the pain he was in with that many bad teeth. Despite his lack of teeth he has no problems eating dry kibble mixed with some canned food. Bulldogs naturally have bad teeth but add in never having toys/bones to wear off plague and tartar and boredom leading to chewing their cages (especially as young dogs) it is so terrible for their dental health. I should note Harrison does not chew his crate but likely did in his younger years.

He does have dry eye that will require medication twice a day for the rest of his life. The medication helps lubricate the eyes and helps with tear production. Cyclosporine drops are the best treatment option. One of my Bulldogs has dry eye and meds are about $75 for a 4-5 month supply.

Harrison is a very sweet boy. He gets along fine with my 3 bulldogs. We are working on housebreaking and socializing. I can’t wait to see his personality start to show in the upcoming days. More updates to come as we get to know him better.
