5/21/26-Diego’s foster mom took him to her brother’s to do a cat test. Diego did great! They have four cats and he didn’t care about any of them. Walked by them without a second glance. So Diego should be fine to go to a home with cats.
5/18/26-Shocked I still have this handsome boy! He is literally perfect and takes his babysitting duties of me very seriously. Lol He is so good with kids.
5/11/26-Diego went to another vet to see about getting doxycycline for the positive anaplasma test. The vet explained to us that the positive test for anaplasma doesn’t mean there is an active infection but that there has been exposure to a tick carrying Anaplasma bacteria. Anaplasma bacteria effects platelets, so if a dog tests positive, they run a complete blood count(CBC test) to ensure that platelets are adequate. If dog is non
symptomatic (like Diego) and a CBC returns normal, they just need put on year round flea/tick/heartworm
preventative (if not already) to prevent reinfection and protect from other tick borne disease. Dogs
may continue to test positive in the future or may turn back negative over time. Would continue to
check a CBC annually with new home’s vet if he continues to test positive, as you can’t differentiate between new and old
infections. At this time, there is no evidence of an active Anaplasma infection based on CBC so no antibiotics needed. Diego is cleared for adoption!
5/10/26-Diego has been doing so well! He really is the perfect boy.
I hosted Mother’s Day and had lots of people/kids in and out and he did great. Happily but gently greeted everyone. No barks or growls. The fence and doors were left open numerous times and he never went out or even tried too.
He knows all the basic commands plus some. He loves playing ball and even gives you the ball back.
He likes car rides, lays in the back calmly.
He really likes cuddling people but will lay on his own if you tell him too.
He’s loves Josie and would love to have a doggy sister or brother but he’ll thrive as an only dog soaking up all the attention. He’s going to be a great addition to any family!
4/22/26-We’re a couple days in now and things are still going well with Diego!
He is fully house trained. No accidents or destruction of any kind. He is very respectful of our dog Josie and doesn’t jump onto furniture without being invited. He is great on the leash. He met some kids on our walk yesterday and did really well with them.
He definitely has your stereotypical boxer personality and is goofy. He loves people attention and knowing where his people are. He will always come to find me where I am and circle back to make sure I haven’t left. He listens very well. He will go lay down when you tell him too, he knows “no” and “down.”
He was very good while I worked from home. He laid on his bed in the same room and stayed quiet. Really Diego’s only downside is getting use to the crate. He goes in okay, but cries once the door shuts. He is calm by the time I get back, but it still makes me feel bad. I do think he can be left out of the crate, in a few more days I will give that a try…. Just not yet 🙂
So far, Diego is pretty perfect and is going to be a great addition to any family or the best best friend to any single person!
4/20/26-Diego arrived yesterday! He was not a fan of waking up to snow this morning. Lol Diego’s first 24 hours have been really good! He is house trained and knows the basic commands- sit, down and paw.
He’s REALLY good on a leash. We’ve been on a few walks and he’s a bit of a zig-zagger but doesn’t pull at all. He’s not reactive at people or things and he waits patiently until our dog Josie is done with her sniffing before he continues to walk. He grazes with eating rather than gobbling it all down and very gently takes treats. He and Josie are getting along well. He’s very respectful of her. Doesn’t try to take her bones, eat her food or her water and gives her space while laying down.He loves people attention and definitely has the boxer lean down. He likes to try and sit right on my lap.
Seems we need to work on the crate- he went in it okay but was crying and trying to get out. He was in there a few hours and when I got home he was quiet and calm, just not sure how long that took. Overall, we’re off to a great start!
4/19/26-Diego is a very sweet beautiful 5 year boxer owner surrender that came into rescue today. He has been living at a family member of his owner for the past year as the owner was having personal issues. The owner finally decided he can no longer care for Diego so decided to turn to rescue to find him a new home. The family member says she would have kept Diego if she didn’t already have 2 of her own dogs & one of her own dogs is a little dog aggressive so she has been keeping them separate using gates. She says Diego is a great dog and thinks Diego is more submissive and needs a little more human attention. She says if you ignore him too long he will stalk “talking” to you & stomping his feet! Lol She also says he is healthy but no known exposure to cats or young children. Diego is neutered & we are working on getting him a vet check-up, shots updated & heartworm/lyme test done before he can go to his new home.
Here is a comment too from his transport volunteer: “He was a real sweetie when we transported him!”
