9/4/22-We tested Gertie today with our 6 year old neighbor for about an hour or so. Gertie let her sit and rub her favorite spot under her chin. She was a little skittish when we sent the child into the yard to play, She carefully watched her but didn’t run and hide. I think Gertie would be fine with kids once she got to know them, as long as they are properly schooled in proper behavior of shy animals.
Gertie has come a long way. she is feeling safe and doesn’t feel the need to retreat to her crate all the time. She has not had any accidents in the house. My husband is always home so the dogs go out every 3 to 4 hours. I think she would do better in a house hold with another dog or cat. I do not crate my dogs but refer to my room as the “mom crate” Where I keep their beds. Gertie is currently retreating to the MC with the other dogs and claiming a bed. she is very smart and seems to learn fast. I have had a harness on her but she has no desire to walk on a leash yet. I will try again with the other dogs maybe she will follow.
9/3/22-Yesterday was a turning point for Gertie. She was zooming all over the yard . Today she didn’t feel the need to go to her crate at all. I don’t crate my girls. They have beds on my bed that I call the “Mom crate(MC)”. Gertie is now going to the MC. She is bringing little stuffed animals to the bed ( her babies?) She is still skittish but did much better with my husband today.
This girl is turning into a great dog. She knows her name. Because someone is always home here she goes out every 3 to 4 hours and has had no accidents in the house. She is good with my dogs and 2 cats too.
8/31/22-Someone is watching the movie Pitch Perfect (lots of singing/music). Gertie’s first time in front of the TV. She is doesn’t know what to think! Those little ears are twitching away at all the new sounds. So cute!

8/29/22-Current situation : Touchy time turned into nap time for Gherkins. She is still is afraid to greet me and doesn’t come out of the crate by choice. Definitely dog friendly & my cats walk by her & both dog & cats are non reactive. We will see if that stays the same once her personality emerges. To be continued…..Gherkins- Purdy Gertie living her best life!

8/28/22-Gherkins:  aka Purdy Gertie update:
Still doesn’t come out of the crate on her own. She will sit in my lap for an hour letting me pet her (Touchy Time). Under those eyes is a sweet girl.

8/27/22-Eye opener: I was always an animal lover. I used to foster dogs in the 90’s but never had a mill mamma.  Until yesterday!
Let me tell you from the minute I picked her up I wanted to cry. She was shut down completely still and just stared straight ahead . She is a sweet heart I can pet her hand feed her. She doesn’t move just sits in her crate and stares and  no idea what a normal dog life is. Terrified of a bird. You hear about the horrible treatment these dogs get in these puppy mills but let me tell you it’s worse than you imagine. Stop buying from these puppy mills.

I have her in my craft area with her crate covered . One of my other dogs, Olivia, laid by her crate all night.

8/26/22-Gherkins (aka Purdy Gertie) is a 5 year old brindle & white Boston terrier.  She was saved from a puppy mill as she just got too old for them to breed. She arrived safely into rescue tonight thanks to her transport volunteers. What a sweet girl. As most mill momma’s are she is quite shy but is eating up the attention. Right now we will give her time to decompress and wait for that sweet personality to emerge. More updates soon from her foster home.
