2/14/23-It’s amazing to see how quickly these mill dogs learn how to navigate a new environment after spending years in a cage or dirt floor.  Like how a door swings open/close.  How to eat & drink from a bowl.  And how to trust humans.  They really are so forgiving and resilient!  Bijou has only been with us for a short time but is doing better every day with going in her crate at night and settling quickly.  Her bedding is dry in the morning.  She prefers to eat at night in her crate after we go to bed – I think the peace & quiet is comforting for her.  I was having to put her kibble on a cookie sheet but she’s now slowly learning to eat out of a bowl.  This can be a common issue for mill dogs as their food is often thrown on the ground.  As the independent Frenchie she is, she loves snooping around the house.  She seems very confident until you offer her a pet – when her submissive side is revealed and she “pancakes” out on the floor!  It’s funny but sad too as she was probably frequently manhandled.  Despite this, she can’t get enough of all the love and pets she can get.  She’s learning to play with a ball and my boxers.  And when she gets really excited or anxious, she snorts like a little piggie!  We are working on house training which will take some time, and we’ve been doing daily Epsom soaks for her poor little toes as they have abscesses from standing on a wire crate/floor for hours on end.   “Bijou” means jewel in French – so we are shining this girl up to be the treasure she deserves to be!

2/10/23-Bijou is a very sweet 6 year old female French bulldog. She was saved from being killed by a puppy mill as they were just done breeding her. She arrived safely into rescue today thanks to her transport & overnight volunteers. Updates from her foster home soon!
